If the Mercedes S-Class is not luxurious enough for you, you can choose the ultimate luxury vehicle. With the Maybach, the best is only good enough. And a trip in this noble Mercedes is an event that is rarely experienced. Be it as a passenger on the luxury seat at the rear right or as a chauffeur with the fine twelve-cylinder engine.
At the back right in the Maybach S 680, the world is still in order. The perfectly chilled champagne bubbles in the center console, your head rests on a soft pillow, your legs make yourself comfortable on fine white leather and your back is kneaded by one of the many massage programs. A total of 253 LEDs bathe the passenger cell in a warm, cozy light and hardly a sound penetrates the ear. Thanks to particularly thick window panes, special tires and sophisticated acoustics.
Regardless of where the eye looks and the fingers touch, the interior resembles a luxury home that has not skimped on any corner: starting with the noble wooden floor, which comes from a luxury yacht, to the shiny chrome levers and buttons. Even the scent of the selected materials is beguiling, so the super-rich travel with their luxury yachts. Only that this (T) spaceship rolls over asphalt, no glides. Here is the Daimler brand motto: the best or nothing put into practice without compromise. Even the popular two-tone paint job takes a week to finish.
The ideal of silence
So that the gentlemen can make progress undisturbed, Mercedes pulls out a few technical registers on the Maybach. One of these shares the same principle with noise canceling headphones: there are four microphones in the headliner that monitor the background noise in the interior. If the eight-cylinder engine is particularly loud when operated with only four cylinders, or annoying rolling noises penetrate the interior, the system sends a corresponding counter-sound via the bass loudspeakers of the sound system within three milliseconds, which almost completely eliminates the noise. So that it doesn’t get that far in the first place, especially with the higher frequencies, the luxury body rolls on tires that are provided with foam absorbers and are therefore inherently quiet.
“The S-Class is what we can technically do, and with the Maybach we’re going a step further,” says Product Manager Lars Wehmeier. The extra portion of luxury is also defined by space, among other things. With a length of 5.47 meters, the Maybach is 18 centimeters longer than the long version of the Mercedes S-Class. As the wheelbase increases to 3,396 meters, the additional space benefits the passengers. Nevertheless, the extra-long luxury vehicle can be maneuvered surprisingly relaxed through everyday traffic. This is due to the platform, which comes from the S-Class. So the luxury version also has rear-axle steering on request, in which the wheels turn at an angle of up to ten degrees, reducing the turning circle by two meters from just 11.4 meters. With the help of the stereo camera, the chassis detects uneven floors and reacts prophylactically to the obstacles with the help of the air suspension. In the event of a side impact, the technology protects the occupants by lifting one side of the Maybach.
Our staff thought
Even Johann the Chauffeur enjoys extraordinary luxury, be it the fine seat or the mere presence of the mighty six-liter twelve-cylinder that pushes the luxury vehicle with its 450 kW / 612 hp and maximum torque of 900 Newton meters so wonderfully archaic and majestic forward . That is the finest running culture and sovereignty. We can confidently assume that the driver will tell his grandchildren about this experience. And when things get tight, the 4Matic all-wheel drive helps to master any loss of traction with ease. Even if one does not talk about fuel consumption in these circles, it is the chronicler’s duty that we mention the 14.1 l / 100 kilometers anyway. However, this fun also has its price at 216,282.50 for the Maybach S 680 4Matic. Those who are less satisfied with four pots will end up with the by no means poor S 580 4Matic with 370 kW / 503 PS and a maximum torque of 700 Nm. This is anything but underpowered and costs a good 50,000 euros less with a base price of 164,101 euros. The rich and famous don’t care what the luxury car costs. The German contingent is already fully booked for this year and China wants even more Maybach models.
