The new captain of the German team praised his ex-coach as a “great person and trainer”. It’s a shame that the team couldn’t repay Flick’s trust. The team is now trying to “come back stronger for a successful home European Championship in 2024” – including for Hansi Flick. “I wish you only the best for the future!” Gündoğan concluded his statement.
Captain Gündoğan: Flick’s measures didn’t work
Hansi Flick had made İlkay Gündoğan captain for the test matches against Japan and France – as the successor to Joshua Kimmich (28). But as is well known, the measure was unsuccessful: Germany lost 4-1 to Japan. Before the game against France on Tuesday, those responsible around DFB director Rudi Völler (63) pulled the emergency brake.
