The victorious national basketball team is back in Germany. The World Cup heroes around Dennis Schröder were celebrated in Frankfurt.
The German World Cup heroes are back home. This Tuesday morning, the national basketball team around captain and tournament MVP Dennis Schröder (29) arrived in Frankfurt. The players then celebrated at the headquarters of the team’s main sponsor in downtown Frankfurt and presented the World Cup trophy they had won in Manila to the fans in attendance. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD, 53) also didn’t miss the opportunity.
Does the World Cup triumph trigger basketball hype in Germany?
Around 1,500 fans cheered the national team at their public appearance. In addition to Interior Minister Faeser, Frankfurt’s mayor Mike Josef (SPD, 40) was also present. Team captain Dennis Schröder gave a short speech in which he expressed his hope that the German team’s World Cup triumph “will encourage and motivate many children to play basketball.”
After the extensive celebration of the World Cup title in the Philippine capital Manila, the team flew back to Germany via Dubai and landed in Frankfurt in the morning. The national team sensationally defeated Serbia 83:77 in the final on Sunday, thus achieving the greatest success in German basketball history to date. Even under superstar Dirk Nowitzki (45), only bronze could previously be achieved at a world championship.
The last joint appearance of the World Cup heroes for now
After the title celebration in Frankfurt, the German national players will return to their respective clubs. Captain Schröder is returning to the Toronto Raptors to begin preparations for the next NBA season. The North American professional league starts its new season on October 24th. The brothers Franz (22) and Moritz Wagner (26) will then play again for their team, the Orlando Magic, while center Daniel Theis (31) is currently under contract with the Indiana Pacers.
Meanwhile, the German Basketball Bundesliga continues on September 28th. National coach Gordon Herbert (64) is planning a break and can imagine visiting his home country of Canada to fish for salmon. According to Herbert, he can “relax wonderfully.”
