Extremism: Hanau investigation committee starts work

A parliamentary committee of inquiry into the racist attack in Hanau has been set up in the Hessian state parliament. He should clarify whether there was a possible failure of the authorities during and after the crime.

The investigative committee of the Hessian state parliament into the racist attack in Hanau has started its work. At the constituent meeting on Wednesday in Wiesbaden, the SPD MP Marius Weiß was appointed chairman.

The 43-year-old German Tobias R. shot nine people for racist motives on February 19, 2020, before presumably killing his mother and ultimately himself. The investigation committee should focus on a possible failure of the authorities in the brutal act.

“The terrible murders in Hanau on February 19, 2020 shook us all deeply,” said State Parliament President Boris Rhein (CDU) at the first meeting of the body. The parliamentary processing is therefore very important. Committees of inquiry are the very own right of parliament and also the most powerful means of controlling the executive.

The commission of inquiry is being taken very seriously, stressed Weiß. The Green MP, Frank-Peter Kaufmann, was appointed vice-chairman. The committee was applied for by the opposition factions of the SPD, FDP and the Left. The government factions of the CDU and the Greens approved the request, while the AfD voted against it.
