At first the man was friendly and interested – then he insulted the Syrian trainee in the car workshop in the worst possible way. A reason for its trainer to react drastically.
It’s a terrifying story that an auto mechanic recently told on his Twitter channel. Since he, probably overwhelmed by the flood of reactions, is now only showing the tweet to his followers, we will anonymize it in this article, but the editors are aware of the original tweets. The man had to deal with a particularly brazen form of racism in his everyday work – and reacted clearly to it.
The mechanic is an employee of a car repair shop that was visited by a customer with a transit motorhome. “The gentleman, around 50, describes me in a very friendly and factual manner, saying that he would have noticed that his motorhome was clearly losing power at the higher speeds and the engine would jerk heavily without any indicator light going on,” said the man . Because the customer was interested in screwing himself, he asked the mechanic to watch the repair work. He was allowed to do so – for once, it is said.
The mechanic is shocked
When it was time to get to work, the apprentice whom the mechanic looked after also came along. A capable young man, as his instructor says. “Inwardly, I am happy that he is now so fit that we both suspect a defective crankshaft sensor,” said the man on Twitter. But: He is “not a German, he was born in Syria and has only been living here in Germany for three years. However, he now speaks almost perfect German and is otherwise very well integrated. He has something that unfortunately many boys of his age lack : He really wants to screw things up and learn. Every day he gives everything to complete the tasks that we are assigned as a team to my complete satisfaction.
But the customer does not see the hardworking boy, only a “foreigner”. And he is not afraid to express his racist opinion: “But you also have to carry a huge burden with you, I wouldn’t give Kanacken anything sharp in the monkey hands!”, He is supposed to have said. The mechanic could hardly believe his ears. He replies: “What did you just say about my apprentice?” The customer doesn’t row back: “Well, that’s how it is, these people are ticking time bombs. One time you don’t pay attention and you’ll have a knife in your throat!”
The customer expresses himself blatantly racist
There are even worse statements that will not be repeated here. In any case, the mechanic cannot and does not want to accept this racism: “You know, I think that you have no business here with your brown shit, you don’t even know the boy and such statements don’t go down well with me!” He refuses to work on the vehicle and closes the bonnet. When the customer protests loudly and feels that he has been treated unfairly, the mechanic calls in the workshop manager. And he puts himself clearly behind his employees: “After I gave him brief and very excited descriptions of the words that have just been said here, my workshop manager presents the customer with two options: Either go out or be brought out.”

The customer finally leaves the workshop yard, cursing and cursing, and his car is brought to him on the street. The mechanic still has to nibble on the incident for a while – and the trainee even more. “I’ll pull him a coke at the machine and we’ll sit down on the workbench. He’s confused and looks clearly battered,” the man wrote on Twitter. “I put my arm around him and tell him again that he’s a great guy and that he should give a shit on everyone who says something else.”
Mostly positive reactions
The reactions are overwhelmingly positive: “In front of them […] and also to your workshop manager, I take off my hat with great respect. They both deserved a decent award, because that was great, “it says in a response to the mechanic’s tweets. Or:” I would like to be angry with this unspeakable person. There is so much to be said about it, but that is a wasted lifetime and it only ends in senseless anger. I would rather thank you and your colleagues for this clear, uncompromising attitude. “But of course there are also some racist tweets, and from many other reactions to the story one can hear the concern that undisguised racism is meanwhile” acceptable “again could.
However, if more people react to right statements as consistently as the mechanic, then racists are at least occasionally reproached for the fact that their views are neither acceptable nor without consequences.
