A resident of the city of Ushuaia, Liu Zhijiang, will be the producer of “Rembrandt’s Lovers”, a new film that has already begun its pre-production phase. The film will have two renowned and important national authors as scriptwriters: Daniel Cúparo and Carlos La Casa. Together they have written plays (“Los tutores”, “Sucursal”, winner of the Orsai Prize); Cúparo is known for being one of the authors of “The Less Thought of Love”, starring the great Ricardo Darín and “Dos Más Dos”, with Adrián Suar, Juan Minujín, Carla Peterson and Julieta Díaz, which was also a great theatrical success. throughout Latin America.

The film will be an exploration of love, desire and relationships that emerge from a work of art: a painting of mysterious origin that portrays a biblical passage from Genesis, the meeting of Jacob and Rachel at the well of water.

The text tells the love story of Joaquín, an art student, and his girlfriend Rosario who, after the challenges imposed on them by the pandemic, embark on an adventure of research and discovery around a painting – until now unknown – by Rembrandt. But – the deeper they delve into their findings – Joaquín and Rosario realize that the painting connects with their feelings and their lives.

“I wrote the book based on what I feel,” Zhijiang explains. “In my experience in San Telmo, and in baroque art; but, above all, it is a book based on love, inspired by the love between Jacob and Rachel. Rembrandt pursues line and color, but his goal is poetry, that’s why I decided to write a book before anything else. But then I thought, why not take it to the cinema screens, to reach the whole world?
The film will be developed by audiovisual producer Marcos Barboza (“Historias Mínimas”, by Carlos Sorín, among others) and Zhijiang. It will be filmed in the emblematic San Telmo neighborhood, in Ushuaia and in Rembrandt’s place of origin: Holland. Production is already underway and aims to be released at the end of 2024.
