Television: Cult series comeback: “Neighbors” starts as a streaming soap

The TV series “Neighbors” once made Kylie Minogue famous – then the soap was canceled after 37 years. To the delight of the fans, the hoped-for comeback is now happening.

Almost 14 months ago, one of the world’s longest television series ended with an emotional finale: the Australian cult soap “Neighbours”. Now there is a comeback on the streaming platforms “Prime Video” (for Australia, New Zealand and Canada, among others) and “Amazon Freevee” (UK and USA). The new episodes start on Monday evening (local time), as Amazon announced. It was initially unclear whether and when the series could be seen in Germany.

For Australian TV fans, the daily soap also airs Monday to Friday on Channel 10 and 10 Peach. The guest stars include Guy Pearce (“LA Confidential”), one of the “Neighbors” veterans. Mischa Barton (“OC, California”) is also there: “I’m happy to be part of the next chapter of this legendary show,” the Australian broadcaster “ABC” quoted the British native as saying. According to information, pop icon Kylie Minogue, who once became famous through the series, will not be taking part initially.

Discontinued after 37 years

The British private broadcaster Channel 5 canceled “Neighbors” last year after 37 years for financial reasons. In the last of the almost 9,000 episodes at the end of July 2022, the big “Neighbors” stars were there again, alongside Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and the Oscar-nominated actress Margot Robbie (“Barbie”).

It tells the story of the lives of the residents of Ramsay Street in a fictional suburb of Melbourne. Russell Crowe and Natalie Imbruglia also started their careers there. For decades, the series has been even more popular in Great Britain than in its Australian homeland. From 1989 onwards, “Neighbors” was also shown in Germany for a few years.
