A reason was not officially given, but Wenner has been heavily criticized for derogatory statements towards black and female artists. In a “New York Times” interview about his new book “The Masters,” he described them as “not as articulate” as white musicians. For “The Masters,” the 77-year-old Wenner held discussions with music greats such as Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger. A total of seven all white and male artists have their say. “The people I interviewed were the philosophers of rock,” says Wenner. Artists like Joni Mitchell, Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye, on the other hand, “did not express themselves on the same level.”

Wenner has since apologized for his statements. With “The Masters” he didn’t aim to represent the entire spectrum of music.
