Drew Barrymore has managed to attract the industry’s suspicions. After the scandal surrounding the resumption of her talk show, the US actress is pretty isolated. Authors talk about the campaign on social media. How could it come to this?
In the “Drew Barrymore Show” the stars chat, show themselves privately, emotionally, and interact with the presenter and sometimes seem like a “Heart to Heart” – a little cheesy, a little over the top. The show premiered during the pandemic. Review headlines read: “Drew Barrymore’s Show Is So Strange It’s Almost Mesmerizing” or: “Drew Barrymore Finds Out Live.” After months of a forced strike break, like most shows in Hollywood right now, “The Drew Barrymore Show” is now at the top of the hit list for writers and actresses organized in unions. Barrymore herself is responsible for the debacle: she initially surprisingly announced that she wanted to continue her show despite the ongoing strike.
There has still been no agreement on the strikes. Many Hollywood greats are showing solidarity to ensure fair pay for all Hollywood creators from the studios and streaming platforms. Barrymore’s announcement sparked protests in front of the studios in New York City.
Drew Barrymore: Tearful video with no real apology
After the initial wave of outrage, Barrymore explained on Instagram in a tearful video that has since been deleted that she wanted to make a show “that is there for people, regardless of everything else that’s going on in the world.” The authors reacted with incomprehension. In the video, Barrymore first apologizes to the writers and unions, only to then reaffirm her belief in why she believes her show must return despite the ongoing strikes. The actress continued that she now wants to take responsibility for her actions. “I just want everyone to know that my intentions were never intended to upset or hurt anyone,” she says, her voice breaking off again and again.
Anyone who suspects evil could discover features of a more or less convincing acting performance here. At least that’s what Barrymore is accused of by author and comedian Franchesca Ramsey, known as Chescaleigh, on Instagram. The comedian is herself a member of the WGA (Writers Guild of America) and SAG (Screen Actors Guild) and posts passionately about the causes of the Hollywood strike on X and Instagram.
“Of course people were upset and disappointed,” says the comedian. According to Ramsey, Barrymore not only read her tearful apology, but in her opinion the whole thing didn’t even qualify as an apology. “I’ve said it several times: a real apology is about changing behavior,” Ramsey said. It’s like saying “I’m sorry for hurting you” but then continuing to do things that hurt.
The Writers Guild is venting its anger
TV writer Michael Jamin, who explains a lot about the strike on Instagram, also reacted to Barrymore’s supposed apology in a detailed video. He breaks down her statement in detail and comes to the conclusion: Her words show that she is urgently dependent on her authors, because the posting is “a huge jar full of written incompetence.” It becomes a bit embarrassing for Barrymore when the author draws attention to supposed errors in her text, which, in his opinion, would only underline that his job as an author is of central importance. For example, Barrymore writes that her show premiered during the “global pandemic.” However, a pandemic is already global in itself, so the word is not needed here. “I give the whole thing a D,” the author concludes, a bad grade.

Hollywood stands still: These acting stars support the strike
Jamin is disappointed because he is actually a fan of Barrymore. However, she would hurt people like him with her behavior. If it actually showed solidarity with the strikers, it would not break the strike. “If you stand in solidarity, you have to sacrifice something,” says Jamin – that’s just how strikes work. In the course of the criticism of Barrymore, people also wonder why Barrymore wouldn’t donate to the causes of the authors and actresses. Other well-known actors would do exactly this and support the strikers. Ramsay notes that Barrymore, in particular, has such a long and successful career in Hollywood that she’s surprised she doesn’t support the strikes financially.
The pressure on Barrymore and the show then increased so much that the US actress made another post on Sunday. Now she wants to take a break from her show, it says on Instagram. “I listened to everyone and decided to pause the premiere of the show until the strike is over.” Nobody in Hollywood should be impressed by this anymore.
