Boy band: South Korean BTS singer Suga begins military replacement service

There is general conscription in South Korea – and the boys from BTS also have to and want to do their service. Now Suga is temporarily saying goodbye to the fans.

As the third member of the seven-member South Korean super boy band BTS, rapper and singer Suga has started his service as part of the country’s general military conscription. Unlike his bandmates Jin and J-Hope, 30-year-old Suga was not called upon to carry a weapon because of an alleged previous injury, but rather to an alternative activity. Suga has been doing community service since Friday, South Korean broadcasters reported. The exact nature of the work and the place of work were not mentioned.

On the BTS fan community platform Weverse, Suga thanked fans for their support. He will conscientiously fulfill his duty and come back. “Stay healthy, I’ll see you all in 2025!”

According to reports from the national news agency Yonhap, Suga’s call-up for reserve duty may be related to shoulder surgery three years ago. The Bighit Music label had earlier asked fans not to show up at its service venue. Bighit announced last October that all seven members of BTS would dutifully complete their several months of military service. The other four are RM, Jimin, Jungkook and V.

BTS are currently the most successful music group in South Korean pop music, the so-called K-Pop. The boy band stormed the charts with hits like “Dynamite” and “Permission to Dance.” Last year they surprisingly announced that they were taking a break as a group and that the members wanted to concentrate on solo projects for the time being. BTS later addressed rumors of a dissolution.
