French rapper MHD has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for murder. The Paris jury found that the musician was complicit in the death of a young man around five years ago. Five other co-defendants were also convicted in the case on Saturday evening, as several French media unanimously reported.
The incident occurred on the night of July 5th to 6th, 2018 in Paris. A 23-year-old man was deliberately run over by a car and then beaten and attacked with knives by around ten men. The man died from his injuries. The car was found burned out in a parking lot a day later.
During the investigation it was discovered that the burned-out Mercedes belonged to the musician. Several witnesses claimed to have seen him at the crime scene. The case is said to be centered around a gang dispute.
MHD, whose real name is Mohamed Sylla, is considered a pioneer of Afro-Trap, a mixture of hip-hop and African music. He became known in France in 2015 thanks to a video published on YouTube.
