“He’s such an inspiration to me,” Alexandra Grant says of Keanu Reeves. Her work became happier because of him.
Alexandra Grant (50) gave an insight into her relationship with Hollywood star Keanu Reeves (59) in a rare interview. “What I love about Keanu and our interactions is that we push each other to build new paths,” she said on the sidelines of the Los Angeles Beverly Arts Icon Awards.
“He’s so creative, he’s so nice”
The visual artist attended the event at the Four Seasons Hotel alone and mused in an interview with People about whether it’s better to walk the red carpet as a couple: “The good news about falling in love as an adult is “I had established my own career by the time my relationship began,” she says. “I feel very confident in the relationship on the red carpet.” What this means for their partnership is that they are dependent on each other “in the best sense of the word” and at the same time independent.
When asked how she and the actor interact professionally, Grant recalled a moment when she was creatively stuck: “In a moment of frustration in my life, I once said, ‘Sometimes I feel like a Maserati, stuck in a traffic jam’, that I have this big engine, but for various reasons I could never drive.” She believes that every creative person feels this way. However, thanks to Reeves, she seems to be able to overcome this hurdle: “What I love about Keanu and our interaction is that we push each other to build new roads. Seeing the other person solve problems is inspiring, for example : ‘Well, okay, this is a dead end.’ How do I try the other one?'”
She further emphasized: “He is a huge inspiration to me. He is so creative, he is so kind. He works so hard.” The 50-year-old said that the two are connected through their work: “My work is much more of a private performance, but I have a text that I interpret in the studio into a painting, into an object,” she said. “He takes the text privately and then turns it into a public performance. There is a relationship. We are both readers and researchers at heart. We both care about people and we care about characters.”
Connected through their work
There are many similarities between them. “Sometimes I have the feeling when I make a film, like we’re seeing now in the strike, that it’s a cruise ship. Everyone is dependent on everyone else. You can’t set off and – as an artist, maybe I was at the beginning of my Career in a kayak on the sea of creativity. Now it may be a small speedboat, but it is still much more maneuverable.” She believes that this is also very inspiring for Reeves. “To make a film you need hundreds of people. To be an artist you don’t have to do that. You need one. You need a community to get the work out into the world, but not to actually make it happen . I think part of the inspiration is the size differences.”
Her art has also “absolutely” changed since she started dating the Hollywood star. Someone once said to her: “I can see that your work has become happier.” And that is also the case. Work is more fun when you are happy in your private life.
She is “so proud” of him
Keanu Reeves was unable to accompany his girlfriend to the event as he was performing with his band Dogstar that evening. “I’m really proud,” she said. “I’m a huge Dogstar fan. I had the great pleasure of going to their first public show, and since I’ve been listening to their latest album for a while, I was one of the few in the audience who knew all the lyrics. That was really cool. It’s fun. It’s more than just fun.”
She continued, “I was dancing to all the lyrics and then I looked around and thought, ‘No one has heard the album except me and a few people.'” Grant said she was “so proud” and “happy” for Reeves ‘ Alternative rock band that reunited this year after 20 years. “I’m glad they’re able to do this.” She added that she thinks it’s “really great that Keanu has the ability to grow into a musician.”
The couple first appeared at an event in 2019, but are said to have been together for a long time. In April 2023, they celebrated their love very publicly: They appeared together on the red carpet at the Museum of Contemporary Art gala in Los Angeles. The “John Wick” star and the artist not only held hands, they also kissed in front of the photographers. The Hollywood star also raved about his girlfriend. Speaking to People magazine, he said of his last moment of happiness: “A few days ago with my sweetheart.” He and Alexandra Grant were “in bed” and “connected.” “We smiled, laughed and giggled. We felt great. It was just very nice to be together.”
