Martin Scorsese once again took aim at comic book film culture

In a new profile with the GQ portal, the director Martin Scorsese spoke about comic book culture and franchises, a topic he has spoken about extensively in the past.

When asked about those blockbusters, Scorsese said their omnipresence could be negative for audiences not well versed in other types of films.

“The danger is what it is doing to our culture”, said. “Because now there will be generations who will think that movies are just that: that’s what movies are.”

When the interviewer stated that the audience might already believe it, Scorsese agreed.

“They already think that,” he said. “Which means that later we will have to fight harder. And it has to come from the base. It has to come from the filmmakers themselves. And you’ll have, you know, the Safdie brothers, and you’ll have Chris Nolan, you know what I mean? And hit them everywhere. Hit them from all sides and don’t give up. Let’s see what you have. Go out and do it. Go reinvent yourself. Don’t complain about that. But it’s true, because we have to save cinema.”

The differences between streaming and conventional cinema according to Scorsese

The director also talked about the definition of content in the streaming era, as opposed to real cinema.

“I think that manufactured content is not really cinema”, he said, adding: “It’s almost like the AI made a movie. And that doesn’t mean you don’t have amazing directors and special effects people making beautiful works of art. But what does it mean? What do these films mean, what will they give you? Other than kind of consummating something and then eliminating it from your mind, from your entire body, you know? So what is he giving you?

Scorsese’s next film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” will be released in theaters on October 19.
