Loren, who turned 89 on Sept. 20, was due to arrive in Bari, Italy, on Tuesday to receive honorary citizenship while also opening the fourth outpost of his Sophia Loren restaurant chain.

The restaurant posted on Instagram that Loren will have to have a brief period of convalescence, followed by rehabilitation.
“A fall today at her home in Geneva caused Ms. Loren to fracture her hip. Operated with a positive result, she will now have to observe a brief recovery period and follow a path of rehabilitation,” she reads in the post.
“Fortunately everything went well and the Lady will return to us very soon. The entire Sophia Loren Restaurant team takes this opportunity to wish her a speedy recovery. #sophialoren @sophialorenrestaurant.”
The publication also reported that Loren’s sons, Carlo Jr., 54, and Edoardo, 50, have been by their mother’s side in the hospital. Loren shared her children with her late husband, film producer Carlo Ponti, who died in 2007 at the age of 94.
