When the German Television Prize is awarded, a trend is emerging that could worry public and private TV broadcasters: many prizes go to streaming services. The big winner of the evening was Jella Haase.
Streaming services won in important categories at the German Television Awards this year. The Netflix series “Kleo” about a GDR contract killer won two awards, once as “best drama series” and with leading actress Jella Haase also the award for “best actress”. “Best Actor” went to Philip Froissant, who played the emperor, Sisi’s husband, in the Netflix series “The Empress” about Elisabeth of Austria. “King of Stonks”, also Netflix, impressed the jury in the “Best Comedy Series” category. “Best documentary series” went to Joko Winterscheidt’s “The World’s Most Dangerous Show” (Amazon Prime Video).
The German Television Prize was awarded on Thursday evening in Cologne. Regarding the statistics, the distributors said: “seven awards to ZDF, six to Netflix, five to RTL Deutschland and four each to ARD and ProSiebenSat.1.” Two prizes also went to Prime Video productions and one each to Sky and Joyn.
German Television Prize: Classic TV channels dominate in the information sector
The journalist Arndt Ginzel was honored for his reporting on the Ukraine war on ZDF (Best Individual Performance Information). Another trophy went to ARD and the “Tagesthemen” edition from Kiev six months after the start of the war (Best Information). RTL’s “Dying for Beginners” was named the “best infotainment format”: In the documentary series, Steffen Hallaschka and drag queen Olivia Jones dealt with death.
ZDF’s World Cup coverage was named “best sports program” because it did not leave out political aspects of the tournament in Qatar. For the jury, the “Best Documentary/Reportage” was the Pro-Sieben production “Abandoned and Forgotten? Afghanistan in the Grip of the Taliban” by Thilo Mischke.
“The Mayor” (ZDF) with Anna Schudt as a volunteer local politician who is committed to helping refugees was “Best TV Film”. The musicians and presenters Bill and Tom Kaulitz won in the “best entertainment show” category. With their show “That’s my Jam with Bill and Tom Kaulitz” (RTL+), the members of the band Tokio Hotel took on “Who steals the show from me?” (ProSieben) and “The Giovanni Zarella Show” (ZDF).
The gala took place in the Ossendorf district, which is best known for a waste recycling plant, a furniture store and a high-security prison.
Luke Mockridge came along with Oliver Pocher
Comedian Luke Mockridge took the opportunity to make a comeback in the media public: “It’s always nice to see the industry and come back into the arms of this very loving media bubble after a two-year break.” The 34-year-old came to an awards gala alongside his colleague Oliver Pocher, who appeared as a single again for the first time after separating from his wife Amira.
The television award was invented 25 years ago and was first awarded in 1999. The most famous moment was probably in 2008, when the literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki (1920-2013) rejected the trophy intended for him with the words: “I won’t accept this prize! I didn’t know what was waiting for me here.”
