Today, during the fourth day, the Buenos Aires Literature Festival will have a packed agenda that will be distributed among the seven venues that will include a master class by the playwright and director Mauricio Kartun and another by the American writer Jonathan Franzen and, in addition, a theater reading and a poetry workshop.

At 11 a.m., at Malba, Jonatan Franzen will give a master class in which he will address the problem of beginnings in literature. “Franzen will explore the challenge of going from the blank page to the moment of writing, and will address certain fundamental aspects such as finding the tone of the narrative voice; the design of space; the importance of fictional desire and the construction of the pact of trust between the writer and the reader. To observe these elements at work, Franzen will analyze the beginnings of his six novels, and also the first sentences of classic novels by other writers,” the event organizers promise. The activity requires prior entry reservation and will be with simultaneous translation.

At 3 p.m., at the Kirchner Cultural Center, a theoretical-practical poetry workshop will take place in which the specificities, intersections and hybridizations between poetic writing and narrative will be worked on. “Based on texts by contemporary poets, we are going to explore the possible technical resources when telling a story in a poem. In the first class a writing prompt will be proposed. We will address the texts that emerged from this prompt as a group in the second meeting “The idea of the workshop is that in addition to incorporating theoretical tools and readings, each person begins to find their personal and non-transferable way of telling a story in a poetic text,” says Filba’s invitation.

At 4 p.m., at the Santander Foundation and after months of work, the five finalists of the more than ten thousand stories that were received for the first version of the short story contest presented by the Plagio Foundation will be announced. The first award ceremony of the Buenos Aires in 100 Words short story contest will take place there.

Also at 4 p.m., but in the dome of the Kirchner Cultural Center, a reading theater activity will take place. According to its etymology, dramaturgy is “the action and effect of creating.” “What changes when hearing a dramatic text without the support of acting? How do the senses open when the voice is the passage to the imagination? In this meeting three playwrights will share fragments of their own works,” ask the organizers. In this framework, Clément Bondu will read “El Porvenir”, Lorena Vega will read “Imprenteros” and Paula Marull will read “What the River Does”.

At 5 p.m., in the Hall of Honor of the Kirchner Cultural Center, the playwright and director Mauricio Kartun will reflect on the mechanisms that allow art to positively recycle error. “Learning to take advantage of this transversal energy has been the artist’s eternal strategy. And the great teaching it provides from the creative field. The essential learning – in the artistic and in everyday life – to encourage oneself to flow while taking risks,” the text of the invitation.
