A production facility for battery cells for Porsche models is to be built in the greater Stuttgart area. For this, the manufacturer enters into a cooperation.
The sports car manufacturer Porsche wants to produce high-performance battery cells on a small scale together with a partner. The battery factory is to be built in the greater Stuttgart area, as Porsche announced on Sunday.
The battery cell is the combustion chamber of the future. The planned factory will one day achieve a capacity of 100 megawatt hours per year. These are battery cells for 1,000 cars. Production is scheduled to start in 2024.
Further details are to be announced on Monday at a press conference. In the new joint venture Cellforce Group, Porsche holds 83.75 percent of the shares and the rest of the Fraunhofer spin-off Customcells from Itzehoe in Schleswig-Holstein, it was said. The company is based in Tübingen. In the future, it will manufacture the battery cells for special vehicles – for example in the field of motorsport or special models. Porsche is investing a high double-digit million sum in the new company. Further details were not given. In 2025, up to 80 people are to be employed in Tübingen.
