David Beckham intimate in new documentary: “We didn’t have much”

David Beckham is not only known as a footballer, but also as a fashion icon and role model for many. In the new Netflix documentary “Beckham” he provides insights into his childhood and youth.

Jennifer Lopez, Ghislaine Maxwell, David Beckham. They all have something in common: Netflix has dedicated their own documentary format to them.

Brand new: The documentary about footballer Beckham, who has accumulated a few other attributes over the course of his life. Father of four children, husband of a fashion designer and singer, and with his penchant for face cream and manicures, he has become the epitome of metrosexuality.

The documentary examines both his career and his private life in four parts of 70 minutes each. Self-expression should not be neglected either.

David Beckham: In his documentary he talks about his childhood

Right at the beginning of the first episode, Beckham is seen walking to his beehive in white beekeeper outfit and harvesting honey. Of course, his initials DB should not be missing on the top. However, the family has not yet reached agreement on what the honey should be called. He advocates ‘Golden Bees’, his wife Victoria Beckham prefers ‘DB’s Sticky Stuff’.

Scenes like these show that the Beckhams don’t seem to be missing anything today. You could also call it a first world problem. But that was not always so.

Mother Sandra Beckham also has her say, remembering details from Beckham’s childhood. When the children were born, she continued to work as a hairdresser from home. “We didn’t have much.” Little David always made tea for the ladies and brought them toast or cake while their hairstyles were still in the dryer.

“I never did well at school. I wasn’t particularly smart. I didn’t have many friends either,” Beckham reveals about his youthful self. After school he always played football outside in the garden. When the weather was bad, he drew football scenes.

Victoria didn’t have many friends at school either. After her relationship with Beckham became known, her life changed a lot: “And suddenly you’re no longer the child who’s desperately looking for friends, but you’re literally being chased on the street. That was new.”

David adds that he didn’t feel comfortable with the photographers’ aggressiveness. But he “loved her world. That was exciting.” He likes it when he walks down the street and a child’s mouth falls open when he sees him.

Victoria also boosted his self-confidence. “I needed that back then.”

Scenes like these about “Posh and Becks” make the documentary exciting even for non-football fans. But it’s really a lot about football, about Beckham’s memories of important goals and games.

Ideally, you should already have some basic knowledge when scenes are shown in which Beckham scores important goals for Manchester United. Or how he found out on the phone shortly before the 1998 World Cup round of 16 against Argentina that he was going to be a father and how he was ostracized after England’s elimination and his red card.
