On the opening weekend of “Barbie,” director Greta Gerwig was so curious about audience reactions that she sneaked into a few theaters. She also made some improvements.

The “Barbie” film was the cinema hit of the summer. Thousands of people showed themselves online wearing pink as they were on their way to the cinema.

Now “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig spoke about the production in an interview on the sidelines of the London Film Festival.

She revealed to the industry magazine “Deadline” that it was Margot Robbie who brought Gerwig on board: “I was invited to go on this journey. Margot Robbie came to me and said: Do you want to write this? She was the one Producer and leading actress.”

“Barbie” director Greta Gerwig secretly attended cinema screenings

Gerwig called it “a great pleasure” that she was able to make this film. But even after filming ended, Gerwig remained curious. She was so interested in how the film was received by audiences that she sneaked into numerous cinemas in New York on the opening weekend. She “traveled around” and “instructed the staff” on how her film “should best be presented.”

She also listened to her gut feeling: “I walked through the cinemas, stood at the back and turned up the volume when I felt the film wasn’t playing at the perfect volume. That was the most exciting thing ever.”

At one performance, a woman laughed so heartily at a joke in the film that Gerwig called out to her from behind in the dark cinema: “The joke was for you,” Gerwig revealed in an interview with the “Hollywood Reporter”.

But not all fans had so much fun in the cinema. Some women reported that “Barbie” made them realize that their partner wasn’t right for them. Through “Barbie” they felt emancipated; the film opened their eyes. The phenomenon was dubbed the “Barbie Breakup” in English-language media such as The Independent.
