Based on true stories, “Maria” will tell the tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of the best opera singer in the world.
The filmmaker Pablo Larrain (Jackie) has revealed two first photographs of Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas in her new film that will explore the life of the legendary singer, often described as the original diva.
Based on true stories, “Maria” will tell the tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, revived and reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris. Filming is already underway and will take place over eight weeks in Paris, Greece, Budapest and Milan.
They will also star in the film, which has an interim SAG-AFTRA agreement, Pierfrancesco Favino (The hummingbird), Alba Rohrwacher (The chimera), Haluk Bilginer (Winter Sleep), Kodi Smit-McPhee (The power of the dog) and Valeria Golino (Portrait of a Lady on Fire).

The script, which was completed before the WGA strike, comes from Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). The producers are Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula, Jonas Dornbach for Komplizen Film and Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment. Sales are handled by FilmNation Entertainment.
Pablo Larraín said today: “I am incredibly excited to begin production on María, which I hope will bring the remarkable life and work of María Callas to audiences around the world, thanks to Steven Knight’s magnificent script, the work of the entire cast and crew and, especially, the brilliant work and extraordinary preparation of Angelina.”
Jolie’s wardrobe in the film is based on original garments worn by Callas. The production has consulted with animal rights groups, including PETA, about the use of vintage leather goods worn in the film from costume designer Massimo Cantini Parrini’s archival collection. A conscious decision was made not to use or source new skins.
