Constant hiccups had tormented him for days. Now Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro even had to go to a hospital for this. The diagnosis: intestinal obstruction.
Brazil’s right-wing foreign president Jair Bolsonaro has been through a lot when it comes to his health. For the past few days, Bolsonaro has suffered from permanent hiccups. After being admitted to a hospital, the Brazilian head of state has now been diagnosed with an intestinal obstruction. The 66-year-old was transferred from the capital, Brasília to São Paulo for further treatment. An emergency operation is apparently not necessary for the time being, as several media report.
Health status of Jair Bolsonaro: clinic gives the all-clear
The presidential office had previously announced that further examinations were planned to determine whether emergency surgery was necessary. The private clinic in São Paulo, to which Bolsonaro was relocated, initially gave the all-clear. For the time being, a “conservative clinical treatment” is planned, announced the medical team.
On the Twitter account Bolsonaros, who belongs to the Catholic Church and was baptized evangelically, a picture of himself on a hospital bed with his eyes closed and several cables on his bare chest was published. At the edge of the picture a person in a black robe and a cross puts a hand on his shoulder. “We’ll be back soon, God willing. Brazil is ours,” it says.
Bolsonaro survived the attack and already had Corona
Bolsonaro thanked him for the prayers, and a series of tweets also reminded of the attack: He had been operated on several times in the past few years after he – at the time as a candidate – had been seriously injured with a knife by an assassin during the 2018 election campaign. When the Brazilian head of state said he was infected with corona last year, he stayed in his residence in Brasília due to mild symptoms.
Because of his current health problems, the president was hospitalized on Wednesday night with hiccups that had persisted for over ten days. According to the presidential office, the complaints occurred after a dental implant operation.
Bolsonaro wrote on Facebook last Thursday: “I have hiccups 24 hours a day.” He suspected it might be because of the medication he was taking.
The President was originally supposed to be under observation in the hospital or at home for 24 to 48 hours. He is fine, it said in the first message.
Bolsonaro was most recently under pressure from a parliamentary committee of inquiry, which is shedding light on his actions and omissions in the corona pandemic, and allegations of corruption in connection with the ordering of vaccines. The rejection of his government reached the polling institute Datafolha last week, according to 51 percent – the worst value since the beginning of the term in January 2019.

See in the video: The Corona situation in Brazil remains dramatic. To draw attention to this, volunteers attached 500 red roses to metal poles at Copacabana de Rio de Janiero in June. A visually stunning memorial.
