He appeared in more than 160 films over eight decades: British actor Michael Caine has announced his retirement.
Now it really should be over: At the age of 90, the British actor Michael Caine has confirmed the end of his career. “I always say I’m retiring. Well, I am now,” Sir Michael told the BBC. He starred in his most recent film, “The Great Escaper,” and received “incredible” reviews. “What should I do to top this?” Caine said. In the film, he plays a war veteran who disappears from his retirement home to make his way to the 70th anniversary celebrations of D-Day in France. The film will be shown in Germany under the title “In Full Bloom” from November 23rd.
Caine appeared in more than 160 films over eight decades. Cult films such as “Charlie rakes in millions” (original: “The Italian Job”) and “Jack gets settled” (“Get Carter”) or the war epic “Zulu” made him a global star in the 1960s and 1970s. In his old age, the Brit shone in the “Dark Knight” trilogy, among others. Caine won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor twice, for “Hannah and Her Sisters” (1986) and “God’s Work and the Devil’s Contribution” (1999). Caine is a cult star in Britain. The band Madness dedicated their own song to him (“Michael Caine”); his distinctive voice and manner of speaking are often imitated.

“The only roles I can get are 90-year-old men. Or maybe 85-year-olds,” Caine told BBC Radio 4. “They won’t give me a lead role. You don’t cast 90-year-old men in lead roles. “You take pretty boys and girls. So I thought I might as well leave it alone,” Caine said. He rejected the offer for “Great Escaper” three times before accepting it. Caine’s co-star in the film, Glenda Jackson, died in June after filming was completed.
Whether he actually breaks up remains to be seen. Caine’s novel “Deadly Game”, a thriller about a police detective, is due to be published soon.
