The creator of Harry Potter, JK Rowlinghas revealed that she would happily go to prison for her views on transgender women.
Rowling appeared to be responding to a story published in the Mail on Sunday, which reported that a Labor government in Britain could make attacks on gender identity a criminal offence.
Critics told the newspaper it could result in prison sentences for those who refuse to use a transgender person’s preferred pronouns.
“I will gladly serve two years if the alternative is forced speech and forced denial of the reality and importance of sex.”Rowling said on X (ex Twitter).
JK Rowling’s opinions that generated controversy
Rowling has become an advocate for women’s biological rights amid the tense trans debate. Her post seems to suggest that she is willing to commit a crime in her desire for freedom of expression.
Rowling added that a court case would be “more fun than ever on a red carpet,” before beginning to joke with her fans about her imaginary prison duties.
“Hoping to go to the library, obviously, but I think I would do well in the kitchen,” she said. “Laundry could be a problem. I have a tendency to accidentally shrink things or turn them pink. Although I suppose that won’t be a major problem if it’s mainly robes and sheets.
Rowling’s prison promise came after she published a photo in X of Dazed magazine, which in 2018 screened the statement “Repeat after us: trans women are women” at the offices of the British Ministry of Justice. “No,” he captioned the photo..
