“Yes, there are things we are afraid of,” said the British-Indian writer on Saturday evening at the Hessischer Rundfunk literary gala. “But what you have to do is put them in a little box and put them in a corner of the room. And then you can enjoy the day.”
After his novel “The Satanic Verses” was published, a fatwa (ruling from a Muslim authority) was issued against Rushdie in 1989. For more than ten years he lived under constant surveillance in various secret locations. Last year he was critically injured in a knife attack in the USA. The 76-year-old will be honored with the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade on Sunday at the end of the book fair.

Radical and bigoted people have no sense of humor, said Rushdie in an interview with literary critic Denis Scheck. “I don’t think Hitler told many jokes.” Personally, Rushdie said he was happiest when he was writing, before leaving the stage again after around ten minutes – “and right now I’m not writing.”
