Pink: She admits to near-death after overdose

Pink shocks her with a secret from her past. Shortly before her career began in 1995, she almost died of an overdose.

US singer Pink (44) almost died of an overdose in 1995. It was Thanksgiving, just a few weeks before she signed her first record deal. “I was at a rave and had an overdose,” says Pink. “I was on ecstasy, angel dust, crystal, all sorts of things. Then I was gone. Done. Too much.”

As “People” magazine reports, she told “Shape Magazine” in 2012 that an overdose had fundamentally changed her life. According to her own statement, she didn’t need to be hospitalized at the time, but it was the wake-up call she needed.

In her younger years, the singer repeatedly battled drug use. The multiple Grammy winner got on the wrong track back then. “I was a punk. I had a big mouth,” she says. But the near-death experience changed everything. Since then, “hard drugs” have been taboo for her. And so it came about that the singer signed her first record deal with her R&B girl group Choice – the door opener for her later global career.

Pink grew up in difficult family circumstances

Pink, whose real name is Alecia Beth Moore, has often spoken about her traumatic childhood in the past. “Basically, I grew up in a house where my parents yelled at each other and threw things every day. They hated each other,” she said. She started using and selling drugs, which led to her parents kicking her out of the house and her dropping out of high school.

Pink processes many of her experiences in songs like “Family Portrait”, “Just Like A Pill” and “Don’t Let Me Get Me”. In it she discusses her parents’ toxic behavior at home, her experience with drugs and the music industry’s pressure to look perfect.
