“The criminals”, or the (expanded) return of a Creole classic

Rodrigo Moreno’s film is based on the famous police title played by Jorge Salcedo, but with lyrical extensions and a touch of modernity.

Morán, a well-suited Buenos Aires man who lives a life beyond his means, decides to defraud the bank where he works, hide the money by compromising his brother, serve the due sentence without hesitation and then enjoy the hidden money. The other prisoners have another idea. That is “Barely a Criminal”, 1949, a masterpiece by the prolific Hugo Fregonese, with the lead role by Jorge Salcedo and a script by Calki, Chas de Cruz, José Ramón Luna and Tulio Demicheli. Duration, 88 minutes.

Morán, a man from Salta who is fed up with the Buenos Aires routine, decides to take early retirement by robbing the bank where he works as a teller. He hires a co-worker to take care of his money. He flees to the interior and days later he turns himself in. He calculates that due to good behavior he will be out in three and a half years, and the rest will be to distribute the money and enjoy life. But the other prisoners have another idea. It doesn’t matter, they’re not as bad as the prisoners in the other story. That is “Los criminales”, 2023, written and directed by Rodrigo Moreno. Duration, 187 minutes.

Why so long? Because in between is the story of the friend, the fear of the internal investigation at the bank, the transfer of the bag to the top of a mountain, the meeting with kind people, especially with a very kind brunette. And the story of a love story and eglogical pleasure of the thief before he surrenders. And the strange taming of the inmates when reading a long poem. After which arrive the consequences of a sentimental revelation and the endings of the story, not to mention the presence of a Tobiano horse, fragments of a French film (coherently, “Money”, by Bresson) and other contributions that dilate and/or They enrich the film. Or the movies, because each part has its own rhythm, light, climate and philosophical meaning.

They are woven together by the search for freedom, a dull humor and a song by Pappo that proclaims “I don’t think we’ve ever had it so bad.” The rest of the soundtrack has some beautiful songs by Poulenc, Bach, Piazzolla, Violeta Parra and other authors, very well applied, just as some verses by Juanele Ortiz and Ricardo Zelarayan sound good. Interpreters, Daniel Elías, Esteban Bigliardi, Germán Da Silva in two contrasting roles, Margarita Molfino, in addition to Laura Paredes, Mariana Chaud, the venerable Adriana Aizenberg, who, by the way, is the director’s mother, and other figures.
