Actor Patrick Dempsey (57), born in Lewiston, Maine, reacted with dismay to the devastating act of violence that left 18 dead in his hometown.
The “Grey’s Anatomy” star wrote on Instagram yesterday that he was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the tragedy in Lewiston. He and his family are heartbroken, their thoughts are with the victims, their families and the community. There is a strong sense of community in Maine, Dempsey said. Now everyone needs to work together to help those affected.
A gunman killed at least 18 people with an assault rifle and injured more than a dozen on Wednesday evening (local time). The gun attack occurred in a barbecue restaurant and in a leisure center with a bowling alley. The alleged perpetrator had not yet been caught 24 hours later.
Dempsey, who played a doctor in the hospital series “Grey’s Anatomy,” opened a support center for cancer patients and their families in Lewiston in 2008. His mother, who had cancer, was being treated in the attached hospital. She died in 2014 at the age of 79.
