While the rest of the Salzkammergut is celebrating the European Capital of Culture year in 2024, the region around St. Wolfgang is going its own way. On the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of St. Wolfgang, who was born in 924, the musical “Wolf – The Mystical” will premiere on May 23rd. A lake stage will be built specifically for this purpose. The libretto is written by the author Franzobel, who grew up in Lenzing, and the music comes from the South Tyrolean composer Gerd Hermann Ortler. Franzobel wants to put the bishop, who was canonized in 1052, at the center of the musical, including his miracles, his encounter with the devil and his ax throwing from the height of the Falkenstein to the place where the church stands today.

The lake stage is planned by the Viennese architect Eduard Neversal. It will be built in front of the holiday center in Ried near St. Wolfgang and will offer around 800 places. The audience will be brought to the performance venue by ship. The project will be presented to the public on November 20th.

The “Wolfgang Year” is also celebrated in many other of the approximately 150 “Wolfgang places” in Central Europe. In the three Wolfgangsee communities of St. Wolfgang, Strobl and St. Gilgen there will be a festival at the end of April that will focus on customs and folk culture. From April 28th, the art festival “Art Circle International” will also attract artists to Lake Wolfgangsee.
