New York says goodbye to a TV favorite: Fans say goodbye to Matthew Perry in front of the “Friends” building in Manhattan.
The rain in Manhattan didn’t stop hundreds of “Friends” fans from expressing their sadness for actor Matthew Perry (1969-2023). On Sunday, “people of all ages and backgrounds” gathered in front of the legendary “Friends” building in New York to pay their last respects to the actor of series favorite Chandler Bing.
“The One where we all lost a friend”
Numerous fans placed bouquets of flowers at 90 Bedford Street in Greenwich Village near The Little Owl restaurant, which is located on the ground floor of the building known from the series. According to the report, sayings such as “The one where we all lost a friend” can be read on signs and posters – an allusion to the original titles of the individual episodes of “Friends”.
The building at 90 Bedford Street, at the corner of Grove Street, was used for the exterior shots of the series’ main location – Monica’s apartment – when filming the series. The interior shots, however, were taken at the Warner Brothers Studio in Los Angeles.
The unexpected death of Matthew Perry at just 54 years old caused great shock in the “Friends” fan base. “It feels strange to be sad about it, but it really was a sad morning,” Variety quoted a woman as leaving flowers in front of the building in New York. “It’s been my favorite show for as long as I can remember. I can’t imagine watching it now without feeling deep sadness.”
“Thanks for everything, Mr. Bing”
For many fans of the series, a “friend” has died with Perry. “He was a friend to all of us,” another female fan told the magazine. “He was the goofy friend, he was the happy friend. That’s why we say, ‘Pay attention to your happy friends.'” The woman also said she canceled her Sunday plans to go to the “Friends” building and left a sign there with the inscription “Thanks for everything, Mr. Bing”. In her opinion, he deserves to be honored. “I know he suffered a lot.”
Matthew Perry was found dead in his Los Angeles home on October 28th. Nothing is currently known about the exact cause of death. In 2022, the actor spoke openly about his long-standing addiction issues in his memoir “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.”
