Brabus 900 Rocket Edition: Dynamitkirsche

Brabus without its G-Class? Almost unthinkable, because most of the vehicles that the brawny Bottropers refine are based on the rustic climbing maxi from Graz. Now Brabus is putting the crown on the G-Class – with the 900 hp Rocket Edition.

Powerful Brabus versions of the Mercedes G-Class have not been uncommon for decades. The second generation of the original G-model makes no difference to its predecessor. Open loading area, tank versions and three-axle vehicles – so far there has been little from Bottrop that has not existed. And there was also a Mercedes G-Class with 900 PS, which Brabus presented at the IAA 2019 with a spiked V12. Now the vehicle refiner from the Ruhr area has launched the Brabus 900 Rocket in a limited number of 25 vehicles.

Because the normal eight-cylinder with its four-liter displacement has now reached its performance limit, the developers have given the new top model in the stable a displacement increase to 4.5 liters. For this purpose, not only were the cylinder bores enlarged to 84 millimeters and appropriately dimensioned forged pistons installed. A special crankshaft milled from solid, together with forged high-performance connecting rods, extends the stroke to 100 millimeters. With larger turbochargers and appropriately adapted electronics, this results in an output of 662 kW / 900 PS and an almost unbelievable torque of 1,250 rpm. You can only feel how powerful it is when you sit down in the chic leather chairs, press the starter button and let the eight-cylinder take a breath while you keep your own pulse down. The engine is already comfortably warmed up and so you can give it a spur on the runway at an unnamed airport in the rainy Sauerland. Put your left foot on the brake, put in gear and your right foot at full throttle – put your foot off the brake on the left and the more than 2.5-ton four-wheel drive rushes off thanks to 1.4 boost pressure, as if you were on the catapult of an aircraft carrier for the next combat mission look forward to.

The slope is slightly uphill and it is not damp, but wet. So keep your hands on the wheel and keep your eyes on the runway – only in the corner of your eye do the digital digits of the speedometer fly past like in a flip book. Under ideal conditions, the colossus from Graz manages the image spurt from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.7 seconds – even in spite of the adverse conditions, the fat sports tires and all-wheel drive make it difficult today. Especially not when trying in the opposite direction with a slight downhill descent. One might not believe that the Brabus 900 Rocket weighs a mighty 2,560 kilograms – the V8 twin turbo under the angular hood seems to play with the powerhouse that rolls on gigantic 24-inch scooters like a pinball. The top speed: 280 km / h – electronically governed. The rear passengers can follow the pace on their leather-covered individual armchairs with a glance at additional instruments in the roof.

So that the enormous performance has a chance of being banished to the road, tires in 295 format on the front axle and huge tires in 355/25 R 24 format interlock with the asphalt surface on the rear axle. The appearance of the Brabus 900 Rocket Edition is just as inconspicuous as the engine power with the fat rollers, spoilers, sills and all kinds of ornaments on hoods and body elements. The 900 G-Class drives almost like a normal AMG variant with good residual suspension comfort and all imaginable extras inside that make life more pleasant on long journeys. But at the driver’s request, this journey is a little shorter than you know, because when you step on the gas pedal, the 4.62-meter-long Brabus sprints from any speed and any engine speed as if it were the last thing it could do would. Every intermediate sprint wants to go full throttle, every acceleration to a derailment of facial features, because 900 hp and 1,250 Nm torque – admittedly reduced to 1,050 Nm – are not for the faint-hearted passengers.

That all of this has its price should be out of the question. This also applies to the number of 25 vehicles built, which, despite the impressive price of 571,270 euros, will find their buyers all too quickly. Because even if many customers already drive a Brabus G-Class with 700 or 800 PS – there is now a new top model for the Bottrop bestseller – a new cherry on top. And it’s soaked in dynamite.
