Joe Biden’s clothing style almost prevented his second marriage. At least his Jill initially found it much too fancy.
US President Joe Biden (80) and his Jill (72) have been married since 1977. At first it didn’t look as if a long, happy relationship could develop, as the First Lady has now revealed.
At first she didn’t think about more than one date
Because she found his style anything but great when she met him in 1975. At a fundraiser for her husband at the Upper East Side’s Lotos Club: “It was the ’70s, it was Vietnam, strings of beads and civil rights. My hair, and that of most men I dated at the time, was waist-length. Do you remember what you wore back then? Clogs, bell-bottoms, tie-dye pants.”
Joe Biden, however, chose a completely different outfit for the first meeting. Then “one day out of the blue I was invited on a date and that evening a handsome young senator showed up at my door,” she said, revealing that he was actually way too stylish for her: “I took one look at his perfect suit and his leather loafers and thought, ‘Thank God it’s just a date!'”
That evening she probably didn’t think that she would have a long future with Joe Biden. She went on to reveal that she took her time before agreeing to get married: “Well, one date eventually turned into a marriage proposal. And okay, if I’m being completely honest, there were five proposals because that wasn’t part of my plan.”
“Knew it had to be forever”
Her hesitation also had to do with his family situation: “Moreover, it wasn’t just my heart that was at stake… as many of you know, years before, Joe’s wife Neilia and his young daughter were killed in a car accident.” Biden was widowed in 1972 and was a single father to sons Beau and Hunter. After all the boys had lost, “I knew that if I said yes to Joe, it had to be forever,” the first lady said. “At some point I realized that my love for Joe and the boys outweighed any fears I had and I said yes. And here we are 46 years later.”
The couple married in New York in the summer of 1977, and their daughter Ashley (42) was born four years later.
