The most important thing for the director and executive producer Sydney Freeland (“Reservation Dogs”) is that it is the first superhero series to focus on a deaf and Native American character: Maya López (Alaqua Cox), who made his debut in the 2021 series “Hawkeye”.

“Representation was extremely important to me and everyone on the team,” Freeland said at a press event for the series in October, where she was joined by executive producer Brad Winderbaum (who is also head of streaming, television and animation in Marvel). But while the filmmakers said the show had Indigenous and deaf representation in front of and behind the camera, more efforts were made to ensure a high level of authenticity during production.
What Echo is about
In Echo, Maya is being hunted by the criminal empire of Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). When the journey brings her home, she must confront her own family and her legacy.
