The project “Suave Star” by Nacha Canvas, in which the artist uses concrete worked with air injection to compose her work, won the fifth edition of the Azcuy Prize for contemporary art, for which she will receive $10,000 plus the total cost of the production of the work.

More than 200 artists sent their projects of works of art designed especially for the Donna Fiore de Azcuy building, currently under construction, in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Caballito. Of that total, Nicolás Bacal, “Parallel lines intersect in infinity” was selected as finalists in September; Nacha Canvas, “Suave Star”; Martín Carrizo, “Some planets dragged by the rising of a river”; Manuel Coll, “The light of flowers”; Marcolina Dipierro, “Ramificación” and Julián Terán, “La casa del sol”, of which Canvas was the winner, it was reported in a statement.
The artist proposes working with concrete as a transversal axis in the project. “Take this element and make it work both in architecture, as well as in art and the design of space. The same concrete that gives structure to the building is then transformed into a series of sculptures and wall reliefs that fluidly range from the observable and tactile to the utilitarian. The material is worked with a process of air injection through foam, so it becomes light structures full of air bubbles. A material investigation as a trigger for thought, associations and fantasy,” says Nacha Canvas.
The jury was made up of Victoria Noorthoorn, director of the Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires; Diana Campbell Betancourt, artistic director of the Samdani Art Foundation, the plastic artist Sebastián Gordín, the winning artist of the 2022 edition; Jimena Ferreiro, curator of the Museum of Modern Art; Sol Juárez, manager of the Creative and Innovation Project of Azcuy and Gerardo Azcuy, founder and general director of the entity that gives its name to the award, organized in alliance with the Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires,
“The Award proposes a special dialogue between architecture and the creative ideas of artists, resulting in new scenarios for Argentine art,” said Sol Juárez, Azcuy Creative Project manager.
“In our company we aim for innovation and constant improvement. This led us to opt for this alliance with the Museum that, after 5 consecutive years, motivates us to continue providing the opportunity to intervene in our buildings with unique works that merge with architecture,” said Gerardo Azcuy.
“The Azcuy Prize is surpassing for the Argentine art scene, which invites all artists to present projects that go beyond their comfort zones. And it is transformative, because it offers artists unparalleled development opportunities. We hope that it will be positioned as an example for all urban developers in our country. It is a joy to celebrate one more year the continuity of this Award that continues to support the integration of art in everyday life,” said the director of the Moderno, Victoria Noorthoorn.
