It has been more than 43 years since the last visit of a Spanish king to Denmark. The reception was nevertheless warm.
Spain’s King Felipe VI (55) and Queen Letizia (51) arrived in Denmark for a three-day visit. At the beginning of the first official state visit by a Spanish king in more than 43 years, the couple was received by the Danish monarch Margrethe II (83) at Copenhagen airport.
They then traveled in a closed carriage from 1889 and accompanied by dozens of riders from the Kastellet citadel to Amalienborg Castle. Hundreds of onlookers watched the journey from the side of the road, some of them waving Spanish or Danish flags. Felipe then had a conversation with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen before a gala dinner was planned at Christiansborg Palace at the end of the first day.
Felipe and Letizia will stay in Denmark until Wednesday. They will be accompanied by Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares and a business delegation. The overarching goal of the state visit is to strengthen the connections between the two countries and to develop economic and cultural relationships.
Denmark’s Crown Prince Frederik and his wife Crown Princess Mary play a role in several arrangements during the visit – like Felipe and Letizia, they are 55 and 51 years old respectively and therefore come from the same generation of the royal family. The last Spanish king to visit Denmark was Felipe’s father Juan Carlos I with his wife Sofía in March 1980.
