Robbie Williams talks about his splits from Take That and Geri Halliwell in a documentary. Envy and distrust were the triggers.
Robbie Williams (49) reveals what is behind his separation from Take That and ex-girlfriend Geri Halliwell (51). In the Netflix documentary “Robbie Williams”, which has been available since November 8th, the singer talks about his turbulent past. Fans will find out in the four-part miniseries.
Robbie was jealous of Gary Barlow
According to British media reports, Robbie Williams admits in the documentary that he was jealous of his Take That colleague Gary Barlow (52) when they played together in the boy band from 1990 to 1995. Barlow was the focus of the group at the time. Williams went on to say in the documentary that he was “vindictive” when he then started his solo career.
Williams said he liked Gary the least at Take That because he was the one who was supposed to have the career and everything else, “and I wanted to make him pay for it.” And he did so by pursuing the career that Barlow was destined for. Today Robbie Williams says of his behavior back then: “I’m sorry I treated Gary like that.”
This is how Robbie Williams and Take That broke up
At the end of 1994, Williams’ drug and alcohol consumption was said to have become a problem at Take That, as has been previously reported many times. In the documentary, the artist apparently explains how the final break with the band came about a few months later. The feeling that he was not ready or able to fulfill the role that was required of him was palpable. When the other band members, Gary Barlow, Jason Orange (53), Mark Owen (51) and Howard Donald (55), suggested a band meeting one day during rehearsals, he told them that he could no longer be there. “Then they said, ‘We want to see if we can do this tour as a four-piece. What do you think?'” And Williams left the band.
Robbie even distrusted his girlfriend Geri Halliwell
In the early 2000s, Robbie Williams dated Spice Girls star Geri Halliwell (51). However, the relationship reportedly broke down after just a few months together. The reason: The two stars were constantly followed by the paparazzi. One of the photographers is said to have falsely told Robbie that Geri Halliwell herself had given the paparazzi tips on where to find the couple. He then ended the relationship. Here, too, in the documentary he regrets his assessment at the time: He doesn’t believe for a second that it was true, “but at the time I believed it.”
In the documentary, he reportedly explains: “It just shows what it does to the psyche to be in the spotlight when you can’t trust anyone, and in a way it has the memory of such an important part of my life and such happy occasion ruined.” After all, his hit “Eternity” was inspired by his time with his colleague.
Robbie Williams and Geri Halliwell are now happily married. The singer has been in a relationship with Ayda Field (44) since 2006, whom he married in 2010. He has four children with her. Halliwell married motorsport star Christian Horner (49) in 2015, with whom she has a son. The singer has a daughter from a previous relationship.
