Did a hotel employee discriminate against Gil Ofarim because of his Star of David? Or is the Jewish musician lying? This is what the trial against 41-year-old Ofarim is supposed to clarify, which opened on Tuesday in the regional court in Leipzig and is scheduled to last until December 7th. Ofarim has to answer in court, among other things, on charges of defamation and false suspicions.
While the public prosecutor’s office is sure that Ofarim is making false claims, he remains silent about the allegations against him at the start of the trial. His lawyers, however, confirmed the anti-Semitism allegations. “It’s not about the star, it’s about the experience of discrimination. Gil Ofarim shared an experience with the world that affected him deeply,” said Ofarim’s defense attorney Alexander Stevens.
Gil Ofarim, born in Munich in 1982, is the son of musician Abi Ofarim and his third wife Sandra. In recent years he has also made headlines due to his separation from his wife Verena and appearances on shows such as “Let’s Dance”.
