Sexual assault: Ex-fashion mogul Peter Nygard found guilty

Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard has been found guilty of four counts of sexual assault in Canada.

Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard (82) has been found guilty of four counts of sexual assault after a six-week trial in a court in Toronto, Canada. The 82-year-old has been accused by several women of assaulting them in a series of incidents from the 1980s to the mid-2000s. Nygard has always maintained his innocence. According to the report, the sentence will be announced on November 21st. According to Canadian media reports, his lawyers are considering appealing the verdict.

Further proceedings are pending

Nygard also faces possible extradition to the United States. There are allegations that the Finnish-Canadian entrepreneur allegedly used his fashion business as a “front” to conceal, among other things, sex trafficking and other illegal activities. According to CNN, the New York prosecutor’s office accuses the businessman of using his connections in the fashion industry to influence and attack young women – often from poor backgrounds – with drugs, money and the lure of a successful modeling career.

Ken Frydman, a spokesman for Nygard, said the allegations were false and aimed at harming the designer and his companies, according to CNN. Nygard apparently agreed to be extradited to the US in 2021, but appealed it in 2023.

Peter Nygard has been in custody since 2020

Peter Nygard founded his fashion company in 1967. In March 2020, Nygard International filed for bankruptcy in Canada and the United States after the allegations became known. The entrepreneur was arrested in Canada in December 2020. He has been in custody there ever since.
