Expectations were set at $75 million to $80 million, but those projections were slashed in recent weeks to between $60 million and $65 million. With bad rumors and actresses like Brie Larson Unable to promote the film due to the SAG strike (which finally ended on Friday), The Marvels didn’t even match those disappointing estimates.

Just two other films in the extensive series (The Marvels is the 33rd installment in 15 years) were released with less than 60 million dollars: The Incredible Hulk of 2008 with 55.4 million dollars and Ant-Man of 2015 with 57.2 million dollars.
Internationally the film also failed to meet expectations at the international box office with $63.3 million in 51 territories for a worldwide start of $110 million. Disney expected to generate at least $140 million globally over the weekend. And even that wouldn’t have been great for a production that cost approximately $220 million and $100 million to promote the film to audiences around the world.
