She landed her first leading role at the age of ten: actress Hilary Duff is familiar with castings and rejections.
The US actresses Hilary Duff (36) and Drew Barrymore (48) say they both had to get used to rejection early on as child stars. “There were so many moments where I felt like a failure, where I didn’t get the job or where I was treading water,” explained Duff, whose first leading role was as a 10-year-old in the film “Casper Wendy” on Barrymore’s talk show “The Drew Barrymore Show”. “But I needed to fill my life with things that were real, and that was enough in that moment.”
Barrymore, who became world famous at the age of seven with her role in “ET”, spoke of the strange situation for her as a child when she was not chosen at castings. “I had such a bizarre relationship with rejection so early in my life that I appreciated what it gave me, which was the idea that there is enough room for everyone and that competitiveness is unnecessary,” Barrymore said.
Duff says she has received so many rejections that she can no longer remember any of them. She left them somewhere far back. Even today, she explains to her eleven-year-old son that it’s “not worth holding on to” when he fails in sports, she said.
