Without any advice from almost father-in-law Johnny Depp: Timothée Chalamet impresses as the new Willy Wonka.
Everyone will probably be delighted by it when the film releases in December at the latest. In “Wonka,” Timothée Chalamet (27) is supposed to impress Willy Wonka as the headstrong, young chocolatier. The 27-year-old shooting star has now revealed that he did not ask Johnny Depp (60), who went down in film history in 2005 as Willy Wonka in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, for advice. This is all the more remarkable given that Depp almost became Chalamet’s father-in-law.
Chalamet was in a relationship with Johnny Depp’s daughter
In 2005, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and its leading actor Johnny Depp thrilled the masses in Tim Burton’s (65) film adaptation of the famous children’s book by Roald Dahl (1916-1990). And: Timothée Chalamet was allegedly in a relationship with Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose Depp (24) from 2018 to 2020. It would make sense that Chalamet would get some advice from his almost-father-in-law Johnny Depp on how he could take on the role of Willy Wonka. However, at the film’s premiere in London on Wednesday, Chalamet revealed that he had not spoken to Depp about the role: “No – I really love this version of the film.” Chalamet added that he was “ten or eleven years old” when Johnny Depp portrayed Willy Wonka. He found Depp’s version to be “very courageous”.
Influenced by 1971 version
However, another version of the film may have had more influence on his portrayal of the role: the musical adaptation from 1971 with comedian and actor Gene Wilder (1933-2016) in the lead role: “I practically grew up with this film thanks to my mom.” The children’s book, published in 1964, tells the story of little Charlie Bucket, who grows up in poor circumstances. One day Willy Wonka, the mysterious owner of the chocolate factory, announces that he has hidden golden tickets in five bars. The finders are allowed an exclusive tour of his factory. Charlie finally gains entry into Wonka’s wonderful world.
Two golden tickets: Wonka role and Jenner dates
With his casting for the “Wonka” role, Chalamet prevailed against well-known competition. Tom Holland (27) and Ezra Miller (31), among others, are said to have applied for the role. And Chalamet seems to have found another golden ticket:
