Tim Burton announced on Instagram that Beetlejuice 2 concluded its filming. Production on the long-awaited sequel was shut down for the winter with about two days of filming left due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Filming began in May amid the WGA strike, as the creators’ script for Merlina Alfred Gough and Miles Millar had already been defined. It wasn’t until the actors went on strike that filming was stopped indefinitely.
Beetlejuice 2 is the sequel to Burton’s beloved 1998 cult classic. Michael Keaton returns in the lead role alongside cast members Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara. New faces to the franchise include Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci and Justin Theroux.
Burton told The Independent in September 2022 that there were only two days of filming left to shoot the sequel when the SAG-AFTRA strike shut down production.
“I feel grateful that we got what we got,” Burton said. “It was literally a day and a half. We know what we have to do. “It’s 99 percent done.”
“On this last one, Beetlejuice 2, I really enjoyed it,” the director also said, noting how rare it was to work in a big Hollywood tent and actually like it. “I tried to strip away everything and go back to the basics: working with good people, actors and puppets. It was like understanding again why I liked making movies.”
Michael Keaton’s revelation about Beetlejuice 2
Keaton previously told Empire magazine that Burton was prioritizing practical effects on the set of Beetlejuice 2.
“Beetlejuice is the most fucking fun you can have working,” Keaton said. “It’s very fun, it’s great. And do you know what it is? We’re doing it exactly like we did in the first movie. There is a woman in the big waiting room for the afterlife, literally with a fishing line (I want people to know because I love it) pulling on a cat’s tail to make it move.”
He continued: “It has to be done as close to how we did it the first time. Inventing things, making things happen, improvising and riffing, but literally handmade things, like people creating things with their hands and building something. Fucking great. “It’s the most fun I’ve ever had working on a movie, I can’t tell you how long.”
Warner Bros. will release Beetlejuice 2 in theaters on September 6, 2024.
