“All I have to say about that is… Oh my God! I am no stranger to film sets. I have worked on and off in television and film since 1986, where I joined the staff of the TWILIGHT ZONE revival on CBS. I still remember the rush when I saw them building Stonehenge on the sound stage behind my office, for an episode I had written. And of course, I visited the GAME OF THRONES sets in Belfast, Scotland, Morocco and Malta. “Those were amazing too.”

“But nothing I’ve seen can compare to the Red Keep and Dragonstone sets they built at Leavesden Studios in London. HUGE, stunning, and so damn real I felt like I’d stepped through a time portal into medieval Westeros. “I love castles and have visited dozens of real medieval castles, keeps and towers in my time, and none of the royal castles I have seen can compare to a candle… or a torch… from our Red Keep.”
George RR Martin is already thinking about the third and fourth seasons of House of the Dragon
Beyond visiting the sets, Martin said he also “spent two days locked in a room with Ryan Condal and his team of scriptwriters (Sara Hess, Ti Mikkel, David Hancock and Philippa Goslett) talking about the third and fourth seasons of HOUSE OF THE DRAGON. They were lively and fun discussions, and we managed to do a good job… although two days were not enough. “There’s so much ground to cover that I’m not sure twenty days would have been enough.”
The two preview episodes he watched were a particular highlight.
“Of course, I’m not at all objective when I talk about something based on my own work… but I have to say that I thought both episodes were just great. (And they’re not done yet.) Dark, mind you. Very dark. Maybe they will make you cry. (I didn’t cry, but one of my friends did). Powerful, emotional, heartbreaking, heartbreaking. Just the kind of thing I like. (What can I say? I was weaned on Shakespeare and, above all, I love tragedies and history plays).”
The second season of House of the Dragon is expected to air on HBO in winter 2024.
