The two previous adaptations of “Kiss of Spider Woman” garnered widespread critical acclaim and major awards.

Jennifer Lopez will star in an adaptation of the 1993 Broadway musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” written and directed by the filmmaker “Dreamgirls” Bill Condon, as confirmed by the Variety portal. The music is from John Kander and Fred Ebbbased on the novel by Manuel Puig and the book of the musical Terrence McNally.

The musical is set in an Argentine prison in 1981. López would play the title role, a fantasy woman named Aurora created by Luis Molina, a gay hairdresser serving an eight-year sentence for allegedly corrupting a minor. To escape the horrors of her imprisonment, Molina imagines films starring Aurora as a classic big-screen diva, including the role of Spider Woman, who kills her prey with a kiss. Molina’s life is turned upside down when a Marxist, Valentín Arregui Paz, is brought to his cell, and the two form an unlikely bond.

The two previous adaptations of “The kiss of spider women” (the 1993 musical and a 1985 film adaptation of Puig’s novel written by the director Hector Babenco) garnered widespread critical acclaim and major awards. William Hurt he won the Oscar for best actor for playing Molina. And the musical won seven Tony Awards, including best musical and for all three performers: Chita Rivera, Brent Carver and Anthony Crivello.

Condon has become one of the most prominent musical film directors: he wrote the script for “Chicago” 2002, he wrote and directed “Dreamgirls” 2006, he directed “Beauty and the Beast” 2017 and co-wrote the script for “The Greatest Showman”. He also directed both parts of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn” and most recently directed his frequent collaborator Ian McKellen in the 2019 thriller “The Good Liar”. He won an Oscar for the screenplay of his 1998 film with McKellen, “Gods and Monsters”.
