After their work together on the crime comedy American Hustlenominated for Best Film in 2013 David O. Russell, Bradley Cooper and Christian bale They are in talks to reteam in Best of Enemiesa new movie based on the book Best of Enemies: The Last Great Spy Story of the Cold War by Eric Dezenhall and Gus Russo.
Eric Warren Singer of American Hustle is on board to write the film’s script, with Charles Roven (Oppenheimer) of Atlas Entertainment on board to produce. It is not yet known who will direct the film, but according to Deadline there is a possibility that Cooper could get behind the camera after his work on Teacher.
What Best of Enemies is about
Best of Enemies tells the story of the CIA agent Jack Platt and the KGB agent Gennady Vasilenko, a pair of Cold War spies who developed an unlikely friendship at a time when they should have been anything but. Platt and Vasilenko were newcomers to the Washington, DC intelligence scene back in 1978, the former working in the CIA’s counterintelligence office and the latter in the Soviet embassy. Surprisingly, they formed strong personal bonds, even after each was sent to seduce the other into betraying his country.
The pair were involved in solving some of the most famous spy stories of the 20th century, including the eradication of the Soviet mole Robert Hansen. While Vasilenko spent some time in a Soviet prison after the government learned that he had been working as a double agent for the US, he was eventually freed with help from the CIA during the 2010 Spy Exchange.
Sources say that Cooper will play Plattwith Bale as Vasilenko.
