Election winner Reiner Haseloff would probably have several coalition options. First of all, his CDU in Saxony-Anhalt speaks with one of the previous partners.
A good two weeks after the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, the CDU and SPD met for the first substantive discussions in Magdeburg. Six delegates from both parties met on Monday morning near the state parliament.
The parties have agreed not to disclose the content of the talks. “We are exploring whether we can form a government,” said SPD leader Andreas Schmidt just before the meeting in the investment bank building on Magdeburg Cathedral Square. Last week the CDU, SPD, FDP and Greens agreed on initial dates for explorations.
For the CDU, in addition to state party leader Sven Schulze, Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff, parliamentary group leader Siegfried Borgwardt, finance and interior minister Michael Richter, the previous state parliament president Gabriele Brakebusch and the Harz district administrator Thomas Balcerowski sit at the exploratory table. The Social Democrats go into talks with their top candidate and parliamentary group leader Katja Pähle, the two party leaders Juliane Kleemann and Andreas Schmidt, Health Minister Petra Grimm-Benne, Economics Minister Armin Willingmann and the Mayor of Zerbst, Andreas Dittmann.
The appointment is the first of three exploratory appointments by the CDU this week. On Tuesday the CDU speaks with the FDP, on Wednesday with the Greens. Probable is a coalition of Christian Democrats with two of the three exploratory partners. An alliance with the SPD alone would also be mathematically possible, but is unlikely due to the narrow majority of only one vote.
