Economic shocks paralyze. This must be one of the greatest we remember. People hold back and the alternative of cutting back immediately arises. Some will do without the gardener, the pool man or the fumigator. Others will stop paying for platforms such as Netflix, Star Plus, Apple TV or Amazon Prime. In some cases, it will be the gym, or going out to eat.
The essentials will be prioritized: daily purchases, health, mass consumption products, hygiene, cleaning and of course, taxes and obligations. There will be those who go further and analyze the possibility of changing schools for their children. The idea is to reduce the family economy. The idea of buying an apartment and even changing the car will continue to be postponed.
Travel is a separate chapter. We stopped traveling in installments years ago. In recent times we have taken advantage of the exchange gap to “pay in pesos.” But today the rules of the game change again. You travel “green”. Speaking in Creole, tourism is paid in dollars.
And how many dollars do you have to spend to travel abroad? As always it depends on the date. For example, in January and February you have to pay about US$3,000 per person to spend 7 nights All Inclusive in Riviera Maya with flights, transfers and assistance. If you choose Peru in the months of May and June, it is US$2,200 for 8 days, visiting 6 cities with flights, excursions and hotels. Eight nights in February in Praia Do Forte at the Iberostar All Inclusive with flights and transfers costs US$3,000. Without flights, visit Greece for 7 nights, about US$1,800 with hotels and cruise and about US$2,500 in New York without flights, with hotel and transfers. Always considering that those who can give themselves these pleasures are those who I call “middle class with some rest” and others with greater purchasing power. These 2 groups number approximately 7 million people historically.
