Debever died on the same day that French television aired an investigative documentary on the various sexual abuse allegations against Depardieu. The special, from the investigative news program Complément d’Enquête, previewed the report last week with excerpts from an interview with the actress Hélène Darraswho filed an official complaint against Depardieu, alleging that the French star sexually assaulted her on the set of the 2007 film Discotheque.
Debever’s accusation against Gérard Depardieu
The television documentary also included accusations from Debever, who accused Depardieu of assaulting her on the set of the 1982 film Dantona period drama directed by Andrzej Wajdain which Depardieu played Georges Danton.
Debever, a young promise of French cinema in the 1980s, later retired from the spotlight. Her accusations against Depardieu are not new. In a 2019 Facebook post, Debever said her co-star tried to grope her while they were riding in a carriage on set.
“This monster allowed himself to enjoy himself a lot during filming, making the most of the privacy inside a carriage,” he wrote. “Slipping his fat paw up my skirt to, in his words, ‘make me feel better’… I didn’t let it happen.”
Several women have accused the 74-year-old actor of sexual harassment and assault. Depardieu denies all charges. But the latest round of accusations and television exposure appear to have had an impact on public opinion in France. Michel Saint-Jean, head of Diaphana, one of France’s largest independent film producers and distributors, said no one wants to work with Depardieu anymore. “Like many people, I think Depardieu is the best French actor. But what happened is beyond despicable. Will I still be able to produce or distribute a film with Depardieu? My answer is no,” he said.
