With dubious statements and partisanship, Gérard Depardieu has long since maneuvered himself into the sidelines. There are also allegations of sexual violence.
Gérard Depardieu (74) is threatened with losing the Legion of Honor, France’s highest award. According to Culture Minister Rima Abdul-Malak, disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the actor (“Cyrano”), she said on the television channel “France 5”. A council of the order will meet to decide whether Depardieu should be stripped of the award, she said. Depardieu was awarded the medal in 1996.
On Friday, the Minister of Culture described the actor’s comments in the television report broadcast at the beginning of December about his trip to North Korea in 2018 as “disgusting”. In it he repeatedly makes misogynistic and questionable comments. In a scene that shows him at a stud farm, he said that women like to ride because their clitoris rubs against the saddle. They were big sluts, he continued.
As the media reported on Saturday with reference to Depardieu’s lawyers, the actor is making his medal available to the Minister of Culture. In the press release, the lawyers ask themselves whether the minister’s move is dealing an additional blow to a “dying” presumption of innocence.
An investigation has been underway against Depardieu since 2020 because of the rape allegation. Another lawsuit against him for sexual abuse has been pending since mid-September. The incident is said to have occurred in 2007. Several women have accused the award-winning actor, who has appeared in over 200 films, of, among other things, sexual violence. Depardieu completely denies the allegations.
