Members of Gérard Depardieu’s family have spoken out. They speak of an “unprecedented conspiracy.”
The family of French film star Gérard Depardieu (74) has spoken out following the allegations against the actor. In private, Depardieu is a “modest, even prudish man.” The family called the allegations an “unprecedented conspiracy.” There have been a number of allegations against Depardieu in recent years, including accusations of rape and sexual violence. A television documentary has also just aired in France in which, according to media reports, he can be seen making offensive comments about women during a trip to North Korea in 2018. Depardieu has denied all allegations.
France’s Culture Minister Rima Abdul Malak (44) said in a TV interview after the documentary was broadcast that the 74-year-old’s behavior was “a disgrace” for France. She said he could also be stripped of his membership of the Legion of Honor, the country’s highest honor.
“An unprecedented conspiracy”
“Of course we are often shocked by Gérard’s comments,” but Depardieu is “the target of an unprecedented conspiracy,” wrote several members of his family, including his daughter, the actress Julie Depardieu (50), in an article in the Sunday newspaper “Le Journal du Dimanche” published letter. They complained of a “collective anger” against the actor and declared that “in private, around his children, he is an extremely modest, sensitive and even prudish person.”
On Saturday, according to French media reports, the film star’s lawyers announced that he was making his membership of the Legion of Honor “available”. Depardieu was awarded the award in 1996. The French culture minister previously reportedly told broadcaster France 5 that she had asked the committee responsible for the Legion of Honor to initiate disciplinary proceedings to consider whether Depardieu’s membership should be suspended or revoked.
Depardieu has denied all allegations
The actor had already “firmly rejected” the allegations against him through his lawyer. Depardieu also vehemently protested his innocence in a public letter published as a guest article in the French newspaper “Le Figaro”.
