Pyrotechnics, a risky practice for everyone

The end of the year holidays are dates when many people choose to use fireworks. Knowing the risks for them and for those around them is part of prevention to avoid accidents.

Furthermore, it must be taken into account that the use of pyrotechnic, noise or sound articles and devices affects the hearing quality of the population, and in particular the most vulnerable sectors of society, including children, the elderly, disabled people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as well as wildlife and the environment in general.

In any case, those fans who still want to use fireworks have to have preventive measures to avoid accidents and know what to do in the event of a burn.

Fireworks should always be handled by adults wearing eye protection and non-flammable clothing. You should never target other people, animals or homes; Nor use pyrotechnics in closed places or in places near jugs, service stations, cars and kitchens.

The areas of the body most affected by burns are usually the arms, hands and face because many times the time that passes between the ignition and the explosion of the firework may not be enough to adopt a safe distance.

These are other prevention measures:

-If the device does not explode, do not touch it. It is better to put it out with plenty of water and stay away.

-Do not place fireworks in your pockets.

-Buy authorized fireworks. It must have the legend “Authorized by Renar”, the inscription of the corresponding registration number, data of the manufacturer or importer of the artifact.

-Do not use firecrackers with wicks of one centimeter or less because they do not give the person who lights them time to get far enough away.

-Place the pyrotechnics on the ground to light it and never hold it in your hand. Avoid experiments such as detonating fireworks inside jars, bottles, cans or other containers.

In the event of a pyrotechnic burn, the area should be washed with cold water and covered with sterile gauze or clean, damp cloths. The pain of small burns easily subsides when in contact with cold water. But in the case of large burns, you should find a blanket, wet it completely with cold water and cover the victim.

It is important to remove rings, bracelets or other elements that cause pressure on the burned area and if the burn is on fingers, separate them with wet gauze before bandaging them.

Immediately, the burned person should be taken to the nearest hospital or healthcare center and do not apply lotions, creams, ointments, ice, toothpaste, frozen foods or grease; nor remove cracked skin or burst blisters.

For all these reasons, it is important to reflect on the use of fireworks, which always carries a risk for those who use them and for other people.
